Looking For a Unique Outdoor Activity? Try Geocaching!

If you still dream of finding treasure and are looking to spend some time outdoors, geocaching may well be the perfect activity for you.

There have been countless movies made about treasure hunting: The Goonies, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, National Treasure. And as kids, we tend to spend a lot of time hunting for treasure, too. While we may have never found piles of gold in our backyards, there was just something so exhilarating about the idea of using clues to find something amazing that had previously been hidden.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching may require some patience and a close eye, but it’s a relatively simple activity that doesn’t demand a lot of materials. The first thing you need is a mobile device, like your cell phone. Then, you can download the official Geocaching app. Having the app will allow you to see where there are geocaches in your general area. Once your available options pop up, you can choose a geocache, and start exploring. The app and its navigational features will direct you to the geocache, which, depending on its level of difficulty and its size, may be easy to spot, or very difficult.

Geocaches can have many different appearances. Some are in large containers, are covered only by a thin layer of leaves, and don’t require a lot of walking to get to. Others, however, are very small, are hidden very well, and may require a long, tough, hike. But if you are patient, and look hard enough, you will find the treasure. Each geocache has a logbook in it, which you can sign when you find it, and many contain little toys and trinkets. If you bring
something to replace a toy, you can take one with you as a reminder of the geocache you found.

Geocaching is like real-life treasure hunting, and it is fun for beginners and experts.

Why Try Geocaching?

It may seem painstaking to walk around town looking for a small treasure, but there are so many reasons to give geocaching a try. First, no matter where you may be, there are guaranteed to be geocaches around you. There are millions across the world, and probably hundreds or thousands within just a few miles of you. Searching for a geocache could take you somewhere you’ve always wanted to go to, or even to somewhere you didn’t know existed.

Geocaching can greatly expand your knowledge of the areas around you. Another reason to pick up geocaching is that it will never get boring; there is always something new for you to try, even when you become an expert. New geocaches are made frequently, and you can even make geocaches yourself!

Once you feel confident in finding geocaches, you can choose a location, put together your geocache with its trinkets and container, and register your geocache on the Geocaching app. Besides creating your own geocaches, there are also different kinds of geocaches that will give you a new challenge. Some geocaches have more than one stage, while others require the searcher to solve a separate puzzle.

There are so many reasons to give geocaching a try, and odds are, you’ll find yourself enjoying the activity before you know it.

Tips For Your First Time Geocaching

One of the best tips for geocaching beginners is to be patient! It can be hard to find certain geocaches. The navigation may be slightly off, or the geocache could have been moved. But if you spend a while searching, and you still can’t find the geocache, it’s possible another searcher took the geocache, or the creator forgot to take it off the app. Try not to get frustrated; you likely won’t find every geocache.

Another tip is to start off easy. Find a geocache near you that is large, has good reviews, and has been found by several people recently. All of these filters will make it easier for you to find a geocache. Not only will this give you experience, and prepare you for finding harder geocaches, but it will build your confidence as you start
geocaching.

Geocaching is a fascinating, fun outdoor activity that makes all your treasure-hunting dreams come true. Download the app, and start searching!
