What is stealth camping? Its not a clandestine or Cloak and Dagger as it sounds. This is simply visiting some of the lesser-known campgrounds to enjoy your time in the wilderness. If your goal is to get away from civilization and enjoy your time in the wilderness, These campsites have what you’re looking for. Enjoy the peaceful serenity of some of the hidden gems that can be perfect for your camping adventure.
Horse Cove
Horse Cove is located in the Nantahala National Forest in the western part of North Carolina. It’s close to the Tennessee border, and despite its proximity to some popular locations, it’s one of the most overlooked places in the area for some wonderful outdoor adventures. You can enjoy camping, hiking, and exploring near one of the largest old-growth forests in the Southeast. You’ll find a large area of beech and popular trees, giving you the shade and beauty you want to see during your time in the wilderness.
Mount Timpooneke Campground
There are lots of cool places to enjoy the outdoors in Utah, but if you want to enjoy some stealth camping adventures, Mount Timpooneke Campground can be the perfect spot for you. This campground is in the Unita-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and is the perfect place to pitch a tent. You can experience the beauty of the American Fork Canyon area and some amazing wilderness hikes that will make your experience fantastic. If you want to do some car camping that feels like a backcountry experience, this is the place to go.
Lolo Creek
The Lolo Creek campground is located in the Lolo National Forest in Montana and can be one of the quietest and most wonderful places for your camping adventures. You’ll have easy access to fishing in the area, making it a great place to go when you want to catch your dinner each night. This campground is near the Lewis and Clark/Nez Perce National Historic Trail and is a commercial hot spring resort, which means you can enjoy these areas on days when you want to spend a little time with people.
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
Just outside of Phoenix, Arizona, you’ll find a great place to enjoy some stealth camping adventures. This park is a gorgeous location to enjoy the Sonoran Desert, but many people don’t know it’s there. This makes it a great place for you to enjoy your time and experience the peacefulness of the area. You can ride a mountain bike on the many miles of trails surrounding the area. It’s flat enough to show you the sunrise and sunset on either side of your tent.
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve
The area around this location is scarred by the volcanic debris, which makes it look like something you would find in a science fiction movie. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is located in Idaho and gives you a cool place to go with tons of beauty and some weird land masses that you won’t find anywhere else. There are huge lava formations and lava caves that become lined by snow, giving the area a wonderful look that you won’t want to miss.
Dockery Lake and Lake Winfield Scott
These two campgrounds are the perfect places to go when you want to experience some stealth camping adventures. They are located in the Blood Mountain Wilderness and are near the Appalachian Trail, which seems like they should be much more popular than they are. Thankfully, the campgrounds in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia aren’t popular and can give you the quiet escape you’re looking for when you simply want to get away for a little while.
Montana de Oro State Park
This small state park in California is easy to overlook because of its size, but it has an amazing location along the Pacific Coast. Its located near the San Luis Obisop wine country and gives you some amazing views of the Pacific Ocean with some awesome rock beaches in the area. You can enjoy horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking in the forest of this state park. Its not a large area, but it has a lot going for it and most people don’t know about this incredible park.
